About the Item

Gouache on paper Signed and dated lower left "Kijno '59" Ladislas Kijno was born on 21 June 1921, in Warsaw, Poland, and in 1925 came to France. Between 1942 and 1946 he studied Philosophy at the Faculté de Lille under Jean Grenier. From 1943 onwards he collaborated closely with poets such as Louis Aragon (1897-1982) and Francis Ponge (1899-1988). In 1947 he frequented the studio of Germaine Richier in Paris. In 1954 Kijno had his first personal exhibition at Galerie Saint-Placide. In 1957 Dor de la Souchère, friend of Picasso and of Nicolas de Staël, organized his first great retrospective exhibition at the Musée d'Antibes. 1958 was the year Kijno settled in Paris. One of the exceptional artists who emerged in the 1950s, Kijno never ceased to impose his original vision for over 50 years. One of his greatest contributions in art was the application on painting of the technique of 'froissage' (creation of drawing based on the lines made by crumpling up a flat surface), which became his trademark. Kijno is now considered to be the foremost exponent of the Nouveau Réalisme (New Realism) movement in France. Kijno had a number of personal exhibitions, such as at the Musée des Beaux-Arts du Havre in 1956; Biennale di Venezia in 1980; Musée d'Art Contemporain of Dunkerque in 1985; International Art Exhibition of Los Angeles in 1988; Biennale di Milano in 1991; Galerie Patrice Trigano of Paris in 1991; Nuova Gissi of Torino in 1994; Musée Gauguin of Tahiti in 1994; Grand Palais de Lille in 1999; Arte Fiera of Bologna in 2002; Kijno et la Poésie at Espace 1789 of Saint-Ouen in 2002; Galerie Sapone of Nice in 2004; and Galerie Hélène Trintignant of Montpellier in 2005. Kijno has also taken part in many group exhibitions, of which From To travelling to Athens, Cairo and Paris in 2006 attracted great attention. [Megakles Rogakos 05/2006]
