About the Item
Signature 2020
Of course, life’s directions can be engagingly depicted in a plethora of ways.
Unbridled artist Liz Sloan’s painted aluminum wall and floor sculptures in her “Signature” Display are her very powerful visual demonstration of that.
Liz combines interconnecting and undulating ovals in elemental black and white as her memorable depiction of life’s journey. The closed loop, non-color ovals represent the Universal. She then interjects her “signature” into the work with a bold, blue brush stroke to accent the Universal with the Personal.
Why call it “Signature”?
Because Ms. Sloan’s bold artistic efforts capture the distinctive pattern, product or characteristics by which someone or something can be distinguished. Liz Sloan’s memorable works include these distinctive strokes and carefully displays them just as they would be in signatory real life -- from left to right.
The personality Ms. Sloan weaves through this art is her subtle but distinctive way of not just preserving the importance of identity -- but her identity.
Notably, along with the three natural identity traits – the fingerprint, the iris and DNA – only the signature is acquired or learned.
Therefore, sadly, due to the universal march of technology, this individualistic human identifier is being used less and less. In fact, cursive writing is not even being taught in schools today.
Yes, technology is smothering, or at the very least bridling, the distinctiveness of our biological -- aka human -- traits.
It is relentlessly altering our basic building blocks due to our mechanizing and methodizing everything we can get our hands on that is a biological or learned skill or characterization. However, as illustrated here, the world also is increasingly ill at ease with this mechanization to biological or distinctive, learned skills.
All the more reason that it is paramount that our personal “signatures” be maintained within each of our individual universes…
And the happy summation of the refreshing – and decidedly distinctive -- imperative in Liz Sloan’s work.
