About the Item
This is a unique work on paper made in 2018 measuring 20 x 25 inches from my ongoing "mound" series. This "Purple Orb" has a "companion" work ,made at the same time, the same size and with the same palette of colors.
Most of my paintings are on paper. A series I have been continuing with for almost 30 years is the gravity bound "mound" works. These are sometimes a precarious architecture and sometimes an exacting one. Sometimes the mounds are more of a pile. sometimes a combination. I enjoy endlessly problematizing the possibilities. In 2011 I looked at ways of moving away from the gravity, and the mounds sometimes were hovering or sometimes sprouted legs. The mounds had mobility. They are perhaps a kind of self portrait, as it is an instinctive shape for me to conjure. I like to play with subtle nuances of paint varying the surfaces, the kinds of marks and the visual time of the paint strokes. I use a pen an ink to get a stiffer line, which contrasts with the looser brush stroke. An accretion of marks is literally building the surface and structure within the mound shape. Imaginary architectures sometimes resemble an urban landscape or extended tree house city.
