About the Item
The drypoint etching at the base of the work on paper features a photgrauvre of a NASA space image with drawings of various delegates at the Bandung Conference of 1955. There are newspaper clippings reporting on the Bandung Conference printed in green on graph paper throughout the work. The flags of each country that attended the Bandung Conference of 1955 had a gradient and bitmap applied to them, and these flags are featured across all the works on paper in the show. There are images of the Bernini angels from outside the Vatican screen printed in gradients across the work. The holographic stickers are NASA images of the Grasberg Mine, one of the largest copper and gold deposits in the world. Mining is further referenced in the backwards "SOS" flags, in which "SOS" is in Gold Rush font. Rubber stamps of rubbings of sea shells and two coins created by the Freeport Mining Company (who manages the Grasberg Mine) are featured throughout the work. Text from the original land survey of the Grasberg area in 1936 (performed by JJ Dozy) is collaged throughout the work. An excerpt from Canto XVII of Purgatorio was printed in handset type and collaged throughout the work. There are various dinosaur and moth elements featured throughout the works.
