Alphonse Legros
Portrait of John Seymour Lucas

1907

About the Item

Portrait of artist John Seymour Lucas in Charcoal, dated 1907 by the paper watermark, drawn by Alphonse Legros. This is a Museum quality drawing. Superimposed later signature of John Singer Sargent by an unknown hand. Alphonse Legros was a Slade Professor of art at University College London and could draw portraits from memory, portraits of people he had known of from 40 years ago and more. As Slade Professor of Art he taught his students to draw such portraits which could be concluded in one hour. This portrait of the artist John Seymour Lucas was accomplished from memory as at the time Lucas was in his late 50's and the portrait is clearly of him when he was in his 20's, an incredible achievement.
