Howard Margolis
Abstract Expressionist Watercolor Portrait

c.1980s

About the Item

Abstract expressionist portrait of a colorful face by Berkeley artist Howard Margolis (American, 1927-2015). Unsigned, with “Howard Margolis” on verso. Presented unframed, in a pastel pink mat, without glass. Image size: 9.75"H x 6.25"L. From a collection of his work. Studied with David Park. Margolis was also a gallery artist that showed personally expressive paintings and drawings alongside artist Gardiner McCaulley. They took time to explore their works at the U.C. Berkeley Gallery, for subtleties of their independent performances were not at once apparent. Both technical virtuoso, they proceed along divergent paths of the Avant-garde. Howard Margolis, (1927-2015), is known for his somewhat primitive or naive forms created in a modernist style. He was a young man with a complex talent and message. He was referred to as a “neo-expressionist” with references to the stylistic and emotional content of the work of Munch, the horrendous primitive of Dubuffet and mystic, child-like images of Klee, and abstract expressionist concerns of neo-figurative painting. His message is directly voiced in “Donkey”, ahead of dynamic brushwork and rich, brilliant arbitrary color of which his instructor the late David Park, might have found an emotional extension of his own “no-comment” figurative work. “Donkey” directly confronts the viewer, who knows he is looking in the mirror. Mankind also is denounced in sophisticated compositions of child-like animals and people. The dark subconscious is explored in mystic works where strange creatures float in the eerie light and undefined space of nightmares. There is no message and little of subconscious fears in the powerful conceived and executed little landscapes notably exemplified in a work at the top of the stairs. In this very personal abstract vision, a strange harmony exists between the opalescent sky, the bold dark forms of land and trees and the animated strokes of brilliant surface color. A series of brush drawings, miniature works of art, are spontaneous reflections of his various directions. His works were often genre scenes but occasionally included random animals. Margolis was an Artist, musician, father, teacher, mentor, and social worker. His life and Spirit are be memorialized at the Berkeley Zen Center.
