About the Item

Charles Emile Heil (1870-1950) born in Massachusetts and studied at Cowles Art School, Boston. He later studied in Paris and first exhibited there. Heil's subjects included portraits, landscapes and animal studies. On return to Boston he returned to his passion for drawing and painting birds, and became known for his fine depiction of birds. He had considerable success in his lifetime, winning a gold medal at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. Heil's work can be found in the collections of both the Smithsonian and the National Gallery, Washington; the Museum of Fine Arts Boston; The Delaware Art Museum and The Art Institute of Chicago and in Europe, The Munich Institute, Germany and the Bibliothèque Nationale, France.
