Henry Keller
(1869-1949)
Born aboard ship off Nova Scotia of German parents on April 3, 1869. The Keller family settled in Ohio. Henry studied in Cleveland at the Institute of Art and for 43 years taught at that school. During the 1890s he worked there at the Morgan Lithograph Company, during which time he studied in NYC at the ASL. Keller made his first trip to California in 1915 to attend the PPIE. Following a visit to San Diego in 1925, he spent several summers there. He was elected an associate of the National Academy in 1939. In 1948 he moved to San Diego to live with his son and died there on Aug. 3, 1949. The subjects of his watercolors, oils, lithographs, and etchings include horses, figures, landscapes of Ohio, San Diego, and from his world travels. Biography Born in 1911 in Beverly, Massachusetts, Barnet knew by the age of ten that he wanted to be an artist. As a student, he studied with Philip Leslie Hale at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and viewed first-hand John Singer Sargent at work on the murals of the Boston Public Library. In 1930, Barnet studied at the Art Students League of New York, with Stuart Davis and Charles Locke, beginning his long association with the school. Here he concentrated on painting as well as printmaking, and, in 1936, he became the official printer for the Art Students League. There, he later instructed students in the graphic arts at the school and taught alongside the likes of Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Robert Beverly Hale and Richard Pousette-Dart. Frederick Bosley was an Impressionist painter of the Boston School who most often depicted portraits, figures and still-lifes. The artist was born in Lebanon, New Hampshire in 1881. He studied at the Museum School in Boston from 1900-1906 with Edmund C. Tarbell (1862-1938) and Frank W. Benson (1862-1951), and then in Europe from 1906-1908. Bosley returned to Boston in 1909, obtaining a studio at the Fenway Studios from 1909-1918. He was to become a teacher in his own right, and became the Director at the Museum School from 1913-1931. His many awards include First prize in the 1920 Concord Art Academy Exhibition and a Gold Medal in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Exhibition, 1925.
