About the Item

This original pastel by Keith Bowen, dating from the early 1990s, is presented and supplied in its original frame behind glass. The frame dimensions are 94.5cm high x 73cm wide. The visible artwork dimensions are 70cm high x 49.5cm wide (27.56inches high x 19.49inches wide). An outstanding Welsh artist of huge character, Keith Bowen was born in Denbighshire, North Wales in 1950 and has lived in Wales for most of his life. He studied Graphic Design at the Faculty of Art & Design, Manchester Polytechnic between 1969 and 1972. In 1997, he was awarded the Honorary Fellowship of the University of Wales. As a professional artist, Bowen travelled widely in the 1990s and produced a series of paintings of Venice and another of Provence. He also made several trips to the US over a two-year period and developed a book entitled Among the Amish. Nevertheless, it is for his rich and empathetic images of his homeland of north Wales that he is best known. He says “I feel very comfortable in these wild places …I've been mucking about in the Welsh hills for ever. I have a greater understanding of this landscape, a greater gut feeling for it." In writing about his work he explains his depth of feeling for the Welsh landscape “For the first time at the age of twelve, I stood on the top of Snowdon; I had found something that I wanted to do and somewhere that I wanted to be. Forty-five years later, I am still stumbling around the Welsh hills, and I still feel that initial excitement and fascination with the place. However, these days, I am as likely to visit those remote places that are away from the high peaks, places that are neglected and unremarkable, the forgotten, old and strange back country". He paints the hills and farmers of Snowdonia not just because he has known them since childhood but because he sees a way of life that could disappear. "We and the landscape are one," he says. "The phrase everyone uses is 'We are all moving forward', whereas I want to cling on. "All of these things are extremely important, and we lose them at our peril. If there is a link across my work, that would be it." The subjects that I am drawn to are the unremarked and forgotten fragments of a "fallen world": sheepfolds, trackways, paths, walls and gates. They are the decaying and neglected remnants of former times, testament to an outmoded life but imbued with the memories of a people who have been before. In such places of beautiful wildness are they now remembered. "Ancient people believed that if you walked too fast, you would lose your soul. Well, that's my excuse for dawdling around the hills, going ever slower. Mountains are not for marching over but for being amongst; as W.H. Murray, the Scottish writer and mountaineer wrote: "Find beauty. Be still." Bowen is equally at home using oils or pastels and will favour one medium for a while, then switch to the other. Keith Bowen has contributed to two BBC programmes on art in Wales. His work has been exhibited extensively; frequently at the Royal Eisteddfod of Wales, and at the Royal Academy of Arts, the National Portrait Gallery, Mostyn Gallery, a Touring Exhibition of North Wales at its Best, the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, the Royal Cambrian Academy and the National Museum of Wales, among others. Amongst a host of awards, he has twice received the Gold Medal for Fine Art at The Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales, and in 1992 he was elected a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy. Two Royal Mail Stamps and two books 'Snowdon Shepherd' and 'Among the Amish' – feature his paintings of the countryside. The painting offered by us for sale here is featured on page 27 of “Snowdon Shepherd”. Bowen’s work is highly collectable and is held in many public collections including the National Library of Wales, National Trust National Postal Museum, Oriel Ynys Mon, Llangefni Denbighshire County Council and Leicestershire County Council. This original pastel captures the intimacy and trust that can exist between people and animals. A young girl with a blond ponytail, maybe between six and ten, is standing close to her white or pale grey horse. Their faces are together and their heads slightly lowered, in harmony with each other. The horse’s eyes are almost closed and we feel that he knows and trusts the little human beside him. The horse is wearing a bridle or halter with a blue lead line, which the girl holds tightly in her left hand. Her right hand is cupped as if she is going to feed the horse. Behind then is a white painted railing and post, onto which there is tied a scrap of red string. There is a wonderful texture to this piece; the girls soft fluffy blue jumper, the detail of the horses’ coat, particularly his mane and the light shining through the hairs on the underside of his neck. The background is almost entirely made up of a red brick wall, with chalky rich tones of red and blue, and there is a patch of pale sky above. The sheer size and closeness of the horse gives this picture has an impact; one feels almost privileged to be sharing this moment.
