About the Item
As each of the seekers of truth compounded their knowledge one on top of the other, they offered the possibility
that there may be other worlds that exist beyond our tangible and visible world and they called it a MULTIVERSE.
Yet, of all of the speculation and artistry of thought, we find ourselves by force of gravity, on our planet earth. The
beauty of the human brain is the propensity to grow in proportion to the breadth and diversity of experience.
Some scientists posit that the theory of an expanding universe into many is the result of growth, similar to that of a
giant growing brain – natural growth dynamics, so to speak, within our mind and our world.
What really is a Multiverse? Is it a possibility of numerous universes that astrophysicists would call “infinite,
parallel or alternative universes” that exist in the world as we know it? Is it a layering of space, time, matter,
energy, physical laws and the constants that always be? Or is it simply an infinite realm of being or potential being
of which our familiar universe is regarded as a part?
The spirit of our age happens upon a dominant set of ideals and beliefs that motivate the actions of the members
of a society in a particular period in time. A spirit of possibility, a spirit of infinity that regardless of a situation in
the material, visible and tactile world of ours, there is always a place of wonder that may be a refuge for the
harshness or beauty of the world we live in.
First we were taught that we lived in a singular phenomena of stars and planets that are unique in everlasting
existence. And today, we are informed of the parallel, infinite and alternative possibilities. From the Big Bang to
Cosmic Inflation, scientists have called the vastness of existence a multiverse, an ensemble of innumerable regions
of the space/time continuum that may or may not be connected because of distance. Much like our relationships
to other human beings, we find ourselves in a vast existence of worlds, sometimes connected and sometimes
distant.
How does a Multiverse equate with the spirit of our times? Are we to believe that ours is the only one in
existence? How does a Multiverse affect our state of being in the world that is tangible, visible and tactile? Are the
worlds in our psyche more habitable than the ones scientists tell us exist millions and zillions of miles away? When
we compartmentalize, is that any different than putting the various alleged universes in drawers and pulling them
out when they are of use to us?
In the Zeitgeist of our modern day, with the connections and disconnections of people through cultures, religions,
wars and philosophical beliefs, I believe we live in a vast multiverse informing our very raison d’être.
If our Uni-Verse can be one passage in an anthem for a soloist or a small group of voices, then perhaps the Multi-
Verse is a series of numerous passages in anthems of larger groups of voices we hear echoing throughout the
world, knocking on the locked doors of serenity and safety, as we watch from our own multiverses of technology,
from television to social media, we assimilate alternate facts that misappropriate our minds, openly showing us
how fortunate we are that our forbears made their voyage before this extraordinary time.”

- Daily Drawing Series - 40 Days, original drawings, large scale installationBy Francie HesterLocated in New York, NYThe discipline of creating a drawing each day is a process, like a written diary, to clear the mind, to declutter thoughts, and to observe patterns. It is a method that allows the mind a freedom to wander and drift. A visual journal becomes a safe space for personal reflection–a self-awareness fueled by the opportunity for contemplation and immersion. The painted surface for the drawings was created by dividing five large paintings into 40 separate pieces. I chose five paintings from my Perspective Series (1993-94), which relied on day-to-day imagery that narrated a story about shifting time and how time anchors our day. The brush strokes of Perspectives are fluid, with muted colors – moving from deep blacks to taupe whites. Dividing these pieces was a means for me to rethink ideas and recurring images in my older work. The very thin gold leaf applied to each piece has a wonderful amber tone. This gold leaf is from Myanmar, where it is used as decoration for Buddha or for the dome of a temple or monastery. In the drawings, the gold element relates to the sense of infinity – like the sky in an enclosed courtyard. An architectural element is a critical component in my studio work that I wanted to carry over into these pieces. I envisioned a courtyard–a safe space that opens up to the sky. Unfolding circles define the beginnings of an open interior space. The process felt open-ended. It was an opportunity to get lost in thought and to give me an opportunity to reflect, muse and declutter my thinking. Then repeat. 40 days...Category
