About the Item

Ágnes Széphfalvi (b.1965) studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Budapest (1984–1990). In her paintings, she deals with narratives of women's lives. She thematizes painting as a subject and images from the media―the sources of her subjects can be found in films, advertisements, and her own photographs. She focuses on content, which she favors more than style. Széphfalvi draws her inspiration from Manet and Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, and Surrealism, all while remaining original and constructing a unique pictorial universe. Her storyboards, created with her late husband, Csaba Nemes, complement her subjects through the world of fortune and success. Her work can be found in the permanent collection of the Ludwig Museum in Budapest, Hungary. • Bremen #2 - Black and white figurative drawing on paper
    By Andy Mister
    Located in East Quogue, NY
Photorealistic black and white drawing of rock concert goers - Graphite on paper by Andy Mister. Offered framed. The work of Andy Mister explores the boundary between mechanical and manual reproduction. Working with images appropriated from vintage photographs and deftly mimicking the Xerox aesthetic of punk zines and album covers, removing their specific historical context. Mister’s drawings question how meaning is created or lost through the act of “copying.” Mister says of the arrangement of his images, “It's something like my bedroom as a teenager, filled with images clipped from magazines: bands or writers that I admired interspersed with random images I found aesthetically interesting. I am interested in the relationship between images and connections that the viewer creates when encountering them, connections that I cannot control.” Andy Mister received a BA in English Literature and Philosophy from Loyola University of New Orleans, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Montana. His artwork has been exhibited at Hirschl & Adler Modern, Turn Gallery, Joshua Liner Gallery, Morgan Lehman Gallery...

  • Lotan X - Abstract black and white contemporary ink painting
    By Christopher Rico
    Located in East Quogue, NY
Black and white contemporary abstract ink painting by Christopher Rico - ink on Yupo paper. Offered unframed. For this black and white series of paintings, Rico uses oversized calligraphy brushes on Yupo paper. He lays out long sheets on the floor and masks off dimensions for what would become separate sheets. Many of the eventual works were painted together as one in order to preserve single and repetitive strokes that materialized as part of his daily meditations. This physical meditation resulted in artifacts of gesture allowing subconscious imagery to emerge freely as though they were born from the depths--where a physical entity’s relationship to gravity and environment is different than for lifeforms on the surface. Abstract art, abstract painting, abstraction, gestural abstraction, gestural painting, black and white, black and white painting, work on paper, yupo paper, black ink, painting, monochrome, monochromatic art...
