'Figural Interior', Paris, Académie Julian, Salon D’Automne, Benezit, Bordello

Circa 1950

About the Item

Signed lower right, "Dignimont" for André Dignimont (French, 1891-1965) and painted circa 1950. A substantial, mid-century interior showing a man and three women in various stages of undress engaged in a variety of pursuits. In the foreground, a seated nude attends to her sewing while a second nude leans against a balcony window gazing at a harbor filled with the wooden masts of sailing boats. To the left, a partially clothed woman solicits the attention of a young man holding a pipe. Born in Paris, André Dignimont first studied at the College Juilly and then worked in London before returning to Paris to study at Académie Julian. A prolific artist and illustrator, his work reflects his love of provocative women, the demi-monde and bohemian café life through which he documents his unique insight into the mid-century, Parisian experience. The recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards, Dignimont exhibited widely and with success over four decades, including at the Salon D’Automne, the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des Tuileries, and Salon de L’Araiguée. He was also a notable book illustrator with illustration credits for over fifty books. We are pleased to offer a particularly well-composed figural work by the artist, dating to the immediate post-war period and showing unusually fresh, unfaded color Reference: E.
