André Dignimont'Figural Interior', Paris, Académie Julian, Salon D’Automne, Benezit, BordelloCirca 1950
Circa 1950
About the Item
Signed lower right, "Dignimont" for André Dignimont (French, 1891-1965) and painted circa 1950.
A substantial, mid-century interior showing a man and three women in various stages of undress engaged in a variety of pursuits. In the foreground, a seated nude attends to her sewing while a second nude leans against a balcony window gazing at a harbor filled with the wooden masts of sailing boats. To the left, a partially clothed woman solicits the attention of a young man holding a pipe.
Born in Paris, André Dignimont first studied at the College Juilly and then worked in London before returning to Paris to study at Académie Julian. A prolific artist and illustrator, his work reflects his love of provocative women, the demi-monde and bohemian café life through which he documents his unique insight into the mid-century, Parisian experience. The recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards, Dignimont exhibited widely and with success over four decades, including at the Salon D’Automne, the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des Tuileries, and Salon de L’Araiguée. He was also a notable book illustrator with illustration credits for over fifty books.
We are pleased to offer a particularly well-composed figural work by the artist, dating to the immediate post-war period and showing unusually fresh, unfaded color

- The Artist In His Atelier, Mid Century, Ecole De NiceLocated in Cotignac, FRFrench Mid Century work on card by Sylvain Vigny. Depicting an artist (self portrait?) in his studio with his subject and muses, like Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. Reminiscent of the drawings of Picasso and Matisse who were his contemporaries and neighbours on the Cote D'Azur at this period. The painting is signed and dated bottom left. In period chrome edged frame, currently under glass. If Sylvain Vigny had stayed in Paris in 1934 instead of moving to Nice on the Côte d’Azur, his highly imaginative and original work might be better known. Comparisons with better-known modernist artists including Maurice de Vlaminck, Georges Rouault and Raoul Dufy set him in an appropriate and favourable context. A self-taught artist, he grew up in Vienna and emigrated to France in the 1920s, living in Paris from 1929 to 1934. After he had moved to Nice early in 1934, he exhibited in galleries along the Mediterranean coast and in Switzerland, with major exhibitions in New York in 1938 and at the Galerie Bernheim Jeune in Paris in 1948. Sylvain Vigny was part of an important artistic community in Nice, which included Jean Moulin who owned the Galerie d’Art Roman, the artist Jean Cassarini, writers Pierre and Jacques Prévert, filmmaker Nikos Papatakis, and jazz musician Django Reinhardt...Category
