About the Item
In this small, intimate drawing, Angelika Thusius presents an image of a woman kneeling on the ground before a river. Foliage bursts all around her, framing her in the oasis. In the distance, two other figures kneel, engaged in a similar task. The simple yet stylized form of her body and skirt recall the images of lauded Latinx artists like Diego Rivera and Alfredo Ramos Martínez, but also of French modernists like Paul Gauguin. Looking to these past masters demonstrates her international identity: Angelika Thusius currently lives in Paris with her scientist husband, whom she met in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Originally from Germany, her family moved to Honduras, where she grew up. She has a series of lithographs that were published by the David Barnett Gallery, printed by John Grunewald, and each hand-colored by the artist. David Barnett refers to her as "the Latin American Matisse."
