About the Item

In the yard. 1869, watercolor on paper, 30, 5 x 47, 5 cm C. J. W. Huns was born in the family of Estonian teacher, organ player and sacristan Karl Fridrich Huhn. He studied in Riga Dome School. 1850 - moved to St Petersburg and studied (1852 – 61) in Academy of Art. Artist’s diploma work was “Sophia, daughter of Vitauts, in wedding with Vasilij Dark”, for this work he received the Big Gold medal and scholarship for six years. 1863 - he went to Europe, where visited Germany, Holland, Belgium, Spain, England. 1871 - he lived at the North of France in Normandy and Brussels. C. J. W. Huns took part in exhibitions since his study trips, when he sent his works to competitions and got awards in 1855, 1858, 1859, 1860, and 1861 (big and small silver and gold medals). He also got academician’s and professor’s degrees. The artist took part in Paris Salon exhibitions (1865 – 70). 1871 Huns returned to Russia. His works were exhibited in shows (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th(after death)) of Peredvizhnjiki. Memorial exhibitions were organized in Riga (1950, 1980) and Madliena (1980). The artist worked in Academy of Art in St Petersburg (1871 – 76), he was the Director of Historical and Portrait class. Most of all Huns worked with oil and watercolor techniques; he painted historical developments, portraits, landscapes and types of folk.
