I Want Pizza by Daniel Johnston Ink on paper

Circa late 1970s

About the Item

I Want Pizza by Daniel Johnston original ink on paper measures 8.5" x 11" Est. late 1970s Signed au recto in ink by the artist In excellent condition for its age with no rips on the paper This drawing was part of Power Pathos, a 2006 Station Museum of Contemporary Art (Houston, TX) exhibit showcasing the work of five artists: Ron English, Clark Fox, Gibby Haynes, Daniel Johnston and Anthony Ausgang. The work is part of the Pop Surrealism art movement originating in the early 1990s as the leading edge of a continuum from historical Surrealism to the present. Pop Surrealism is working class, anarchist, and populist; at the same time, it communicates a radical post-Freudian, confessional psychology. Its references and subject matter – comics, graffiti art, outsider art, billboards, car art, rock music, street culture, pop stars and pop presidents – may converge in the work of each artist, but this convergence gives way to an outrageous sense of independence. The central focus is on transforming popular cultural, political, commercial images and personal experience into subversive, psychologically intense expressions of the human psyche. [Source: James Harithas for Station Museum] Daniel Johnston (1961-2019) was an American singer, musician and artist regarded as a significant figure in outsider, lo-fi, and alternative music scenes. Johnston spent extended periods in psychiatric institutions and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He garnered a local following in the 1980s by passing out tapes of his music while working at a McDonald's in Dobie Center in Austin, Texas. His cult status was propelled when Nirvana's Kurt Cobain was seen wearing a T-shirt that featured the art piece "Jeremiah the Innocent" from Johnston's 1983 cassette album Hi, How Are You. Johnston also created visual art, and his illustrations were exhibited at galleries around the world. His struggles with mental illness were the subject of the 2005 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston. [Source: Wikipedia]

Signed limited edition 12x16" print of Amy Winehouse taken in London by Jake Chessum in 2004. Limited edition number 7/20 Jake recalls the session: “I travelled from NYC to London in February 2004 to do a press shoot with Amy Winehouse. It was a classic February day: cold, wet, foggy and dark by about 4pm. We met at her flat and went to a few of her local haunts: a cafe, a launderette, Primrose Hill. The record company were very hands off and didn’t pressure us to do any particular set ups. We just went with the flow. She was really entertaining: funny, smart and cooly indiscreet. I am a huge jazz fan and I remember we talked about music, London and New York.” Jake Chessum offers prints in...
