1963

About the Item

Hans Burkhardt regularly used live models for his figural pastels, which he maintained an interest in throughout his long career. Untitled (1963) Pastel on paper 24" x 19" Signed and dated "H Burkhardt 64" lower right. Provenance: The artist to his daughter Elsa; by descent. About this artist: A native of Switzerland, Hans Burkhardt moved to the New York City in 1924. He studied under Arshile Gorky at the Grand Central School of Arts (which was to later become the New York School) alongside Willem de Kooning, where he learned the importance of strong artistic foundation. Burkhardt and Gorky formed a lasting friendship and eventually shared a studio for nearly a decade. In the late 1930s the artist moved to California and soon became a link for East Coast abstract and avant garde artists with those on the West Coast. He was an extremely prolific artist who carried Modernism and representational Abstraction to a new level of profound psychological character through the means of fragmentation and amazing depth of composition. Burkhardt passed away in 1994. Three years prior to his death the city of Los Angeles honored him by proclaiming Hans Burkhardt Week. The American Academy of Art in New York also recognized his contribution to art with a Lifetime Achievement award.
