A Good Catch, Mending the Nets, French Mid Century Port Scene

About the Item

A large and colourful French mid-century painting of fishermen repairing their nets by Jean-Frédéric Canepa. The painting is signed bottom right and presented in a fine gilded wood frame under glass. A very charming view of the life of fishermen in the port of Marseille in the South of France. The men are all attentively repairing their fishing nets. To the side are some of today's catch still hanging on the nets, on the table there are also some 'oursin' or sea urchins which are such a delicacy in Southern France. Canepa has used a vivid and invigorating colour palette, to carry the eye around the composition. He has been a keen observer of these fishermen, their concentration, especially the central figure as he sucks on his pipe while continuing with his work. It was a subject he returned to for some of his most famous paintings. A very charming and insightful painting full of humour and the joy of everyday tasks. Jean-Frédéric Canepa's paintings, like those of Louis Audibert, Joseph Frégier or André Verdilhan, represent the French Provençal school and its predilection for colourful Mediterranean landscapes and port scenes. He also received many commissons for decorative projects in and around his native Marseille. In 1934 no sooner had he finished decorating the Casino of Constantine than he set about decorating the town hall of Aubagne. A few years earlier he had also been commissioned to decorate the new Marseille courthouse. It is also possible to admire today at the Fondation Regards de Provence, located near the Mucem, his beautiful painting Démeshlage des poissons dating from 1930. In 1937, on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition, Canepa decorated the Pavillion de la Provence. That same year, he also began a series of commissions on ocean going liners. His panels travelled aboard the liner Gouverneur-Général Lépine during its heroic missions under the British flag during the Second World War. Canepa's paintings are still carefully preserved in many municipal buildings and national and local collections including at the Fondation Regards de Provence and the Cantini Museum (it was in 1937 that the City of Marseille acquired a first painting by Canepa, Les Glaïeuls)
