About the Item
In this 9 x 12 framed ink drawing by Josette Simon-Gestin, two women are seen wandering in an imaginary garden with a bird and flowers surrounding them. A younger girl jumps rope next to the garden pathway that provides a vertical intersection of the work. The drawing features a mixture of patterns in a flattened landscape.
"After studying at the Beaux-arts in France, I have been painting, drawing, etching, making collage in the USA and in Italy, Austria, Denmark and China. In all these countries my work has been exhibited and collected.
Numerous series have accompanied me during my itinerancies. Questions about identity and my relation to the world mark my road. I wish to express the complexity, the beauty, the ambiguity of the world as I feel it. I paint women and children in a universe of fantasy made of strange animals in baroque situations. In all these women, there is something of me but the sum of all these women does not equal me or I would have nothing more to say. " –Josette Simon-Gestin

- 'No Way Back #3, ' by Josette Simon-Gestin, Mixed Media Pastel DrawingBy Josette Simon-GestinLocated in Oklahoma City, OKIn this 16" x 20" ink and pastel drawing on paper, Simon-Gestin depicts what appears to be a young woman isolated within the darkened archway of an architectural setting. The smiling face of a larger female figure looks on from the left margin of the work - a possible 'guardian' or 'protector' of the younger girl. The ground of geometric shapes surrounding the figures are filled with organic shapes and contouring lines in warm tones or dark line. This work is from Simon-Gestin's "No Way Back...Category

- 'Dancer in Seated Gesture 2, ' by James Cobb, Chalk and Conté on Paper, 2021Located in Oklahoma City, OKThis 11.25 x 15.25 work on paper features a lone, seated, female dancer viewed from the back. The figure is twisting toward the viewer as she begins to look over her right shoulder. Her legs are pulled toward her body with the left leg crossed over the right. The isolation of the seated figure within the ground of the page lends a vulnerable quality to the work. The 16 x 20 dark brown mat has a window size of 11.25 x 15.25.
