Margie Lawrence
Buck O'Neil, Satchel Page & Jackie Robinson - Baseball Greats, Framed Watercolor

2022

About the Item

One hundred and eleven years after his birth, baseball great Buck O'Neil was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame in 2022. O’Neil’s biggest impact was not anything he did as a player, manager, coach or scout. Rather, what made O'Neil worthy of Cooperstown is the sheer amount he did for the game off the field in his later years. Artist Margie Lawrence shows him here with other baseball greats, Satchel Page and Jackie Robinson when he was manager of the Kansas City Monarchs. This piece is floated and framed in a simple black frame measuring 27h x 34w inches. Minnie Miñoso was a Cuban professional baseball player. He began his baseball career in the Negro leagues in 1946 and became an All-Star third baseman with the New York Cubans. He was signed by the Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball (MLB) after the 1948 season as baseball's color line fell. The first Afro-Latino in the major leagues and the first black player in White Sox history, as a 1951 rookie he was one of the first Latin Americans to play in an MLB All-Star Game. Miñoso was one of the most popular and dynamic players in White Sox franchise history. He helped the "Go-Go" White Sox become one of the premier teams of the 1950s and 1960s. A rare power threat on a team known for speed and defense, Miñoso also held the White Sox record for career home runs from 1956 to 1974. Howard Tangye (b.1948, Australia) has been an influential force in fashion for decades. Lecturing at London’s Central Saint Martins for 35 years, including 16 years as head of BA Womenswear. There, he tutored many contemporary greats, including John Galliano, Stella McCartney, Christopher Kane, Wes Gordon, Zac Posen and Hussein Chalayan. Examples of Tangye’s portraits are held in many important collections, both public and private, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), Harvard University and London’s National Portrait Gallery. Throughout his teaching career Tangye quietly developed a particularly idiosyncratic art practice. By employing a decisive line with bold applications of richly layered materials, Tangye explores the nuances of the human form in an effort to expose his subjects’ true essence and energy. — Howard Tangye Philip Ellis (Standing - Stripe Top...
