- Rooftops (Framed 1970's New York Cityscape Landscape Drawing by William Clutz)By William ClutzLocated in Hudson, NYAbstracted New York City landscape drawing of urban rooftops and tree tops "Rooftops", created by William Clutz in 1977 30 x 20 inches, charcoal and pastel on paper 33 x 25 inches in light wood frame This framed pastel on paper was made in 1977 by William Clutz. It features an abstracted depiction of New York City rooftops as seen from a high window. Of particular note is the artist's technique with pastel; a wonderful texture and motion is created by closely woven striated lines. Sunlight reflects off brown rooftops and peaking green tree tops. The charcoal and pastel drawing is framed in a natural light wood frame with non-reflective glass and wire backing for installation. About the Artist: Renowned as the “impressionist of the contemporary metropolis”, William Clutz uses the city, in its entirety, as his subject. Pedestrians crossing streets become stars of the stage; the hustle and bustle of traffic and surrounding buildings are the chorus; each play their part in the overall composition. Lighting and color shift this observation of the everyday into a remarkable wonder. “It is surely Clutz”, wrote Gerrit Henry in Art News, 1979, “an artist who has rejected the niceties of representation in favor of the quintessence.” The young artist moved to New York City in 1955 and just four years later had his first solo exhibit at the Condon Riley Gallery. Clutz went on to show in major uptown galleries such as David Herbert, where, notably in 1962 he received a NYTimes review titled, Return of the Figure. That same year, his role in the revival of figuration was further solidified with inclusion in the MoMA group show, Recent Painting USA, The Figure. This was a pivotal turning point from which emerged a 50-year exhibiting career. - Der Fled Maus (Figurative Drawing of Costumed Man with Moon on Teal Paper)By Nicholas Kahn & Richard SelesnickLocated in Hudson, NYFigurative drawing of a costumed man with two moons on handmade teal colored paper "Der Fled Maus", made by Kahn & Selesnick in 2011 mixed media, graphite, and pastel handmade paper 17 x 17 inches in walnut vintage wood frame with 8ply mat 7.5 x 7.5 inches unframed This whimsical mixed media drawing on handmade teal colored paper was made by the creative duo Nicholas Kahn & Richard Selesnick as part of their series "Truppe Fledermaus", wherein the artists celebrate the carnivalesque with a cast of peculiar costumed characters. In this illustration, a cloaked figure stands in front of a door with the moon, in two different phases, appearng in the background. The artists' highly stylized approach adds an almost vintage touch. The drawing is complemented by a simple vintage walnut frame, and a sturdy wire across the back provides for easy hanging. About Truppe Fledermaus: Kahn & Selesnick’s latest project follows a fictitious cabaret troupe – Truppe Fledermaus (Bat Troupe) – who travel the countryside staging absurd and inscrutable performances in abandoned landscapes for an audience of no one. The playful but dire message presented by the troupe is of impending ecological disaster, caused by rising waters and a warming planet, the immediate consequences of which include the extinction of the Bat, a shamanistic figure representing both nature and humanity. In one sense, the entire cabaret troupe can be seen as a direct reflection of the artists themselves, both entities employing farce and black humor to engage utterly serious concerns. The family immigrated to New York City in 1938, and Dean was raised in the refugee community in Inwood. Dean's first show (ironically, in retrospect) was given him by the USIA in Brazil. In 1959, he returned to New York to work six months on, six months off in soil engineering and made art in the interims. He tried, and failed, to get into a Tenth Street Gallery. Studying painting at night with Andre Girard at City College pushed him over the edge, and in 1969 he committed himself to painting full time.
