Michael Leonard
Change into White

1994

About the Item

Graphite pencil on paper, signed and dated (middle right), 22cm x 20cm, (51cm x 46cm framed). (This work was kept by the artist for his personal collection. This was the only tonal drawing that remained in his collection at the time of his death in July 2023.) Leonard is probably best known for his portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth, in the National Portrait Gallery, London. The nude in a state of transition is a theme which Michael repeatedly returned to throughout his career. “I am fascinated by the subtle interactions of muscle, bone and sinew that come into play as a body moves…” The nude, particularly the male nude, has been a recurring theme. His figures are usually on the move or in a state of transition but even when they are at rest dynamism is provided by the design of the picture.

  • "Mighty Resignation" Black and White Contemporary Drawing by Mac Mechem
    Located in Pasadena, CA
This Mac Mechem's drawing features a seated nude man draped in a small loincloth. Sitting in a wood-crafted chair, his gaze fixed downward as though he were brooding over some bad news. Despite the defeatist posture, his physique radiates a stark contrast—the sculpted body exudes strength and athleticism through pronounced abdominal lines, robust thighs, and defined biceps. Both hands rest passively on his knees, amplifying the sense of resignation portrayed in the artwork. The artist signed in the lower right part of the artwork. Mac Mechem, a figurative contemporary painter...
