About the Item

Michel Boudin (né en 1944) L'Homme qui ne se doute de rien, 1999 India ink on old pencil drawing on paper dated "March 6 (18)84" upper right Signed and dated "1999/2000" lower right Titled on back of original frame 61.5 x 47.5 cm Sold in its original frame Born in 1944 in Beauvais, France, Michel Boudin's childhood passion was for the unusual folk arts in which he found refuge. A collector of the imaginary, he became a connoisseur, particularly of glazed earthenware, and later became an antique dealer. The desire to create in his own right had already been driving him for a long time when Michel Boudin began drawing in Indian ink in the late 1990s. His works were soon noticed and presented at collective art brut exhibitions held in the early 2000-2010 period at the Musée de la Création Franche in Bègles, the Musée des Arts Buissonniers in Saint-Sever-du-Moustier and the Musée Ingres in Montauban. His inks are sometimes purely autonomous on paper or vellum, and other times he reuses old engravings and drawings found at flea markets, adding little creatures and insects. These little creatures swarm around harmonious, classically drawn bodies. Indeed, Michel Boudin's graphic universe is populated by zoomorphic figures inspired by insects, fish, birds and cats. They are sometimes depicted with their jaws gaping, revealing sharp teeth. These little creatures, represented in hordes, multiply and invade the sheet, sometimes forming a motif that completely saturates the space. The work presented here is based on a pencil study of an academic male nude from the back, dated March 1887. The insects spreading across his back hijack the initial drawing, giving it an eerie quality. The artist sometimes uses stamps made from his own drawings, enabling him to repeat over and over again these zoomorphic motifs that seem to gallop across the paper.

Howard Tangye (b.1948, Australia) has been an influential force in fashion for decades. Lecturing at London’s Central Saint Martins for 35 years, including 16 years as head of BA Womenswear. There, he tutored many contemporary greats, including John Galliano, Stella McCartney, Christopher Kane, Wes Gordon, Zac Posen and Hussein Chalayan. Examples of Tangye’s portraits are held in many important collections, both public and private, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), Harvard University and London’s National Portrait Gallery. Throughout his teaching career Tangye quietly developed a particularly idiosyncratic art practice. By employing a decisive line with bold applications of richly layered materials, Tangye explores the nuances of the human form in an effort to expose his subjects’ true essence and energy. — Howard Tangye Natasha (Sitting), 2012 Mixed media on Pergamenata parchment 100 x 70 cm (39.37 x 27.55 in) (signed) (unframed) — This portrait shows Natasha, an ex-student and model. Here she’s posed in Howard’s studio wearing a look from Louise Gray’s S/S 2013 collection. The collection featured headwear by Stephen Jones, the renowned British milliner who created the cut-out plexiglass fascinator Natasha wears here. This work hails from a series commissioned by Dan Thawley, director of “A Magazine Curated By” for the edition guest edition by Jones who dedicated his issue to Anna Piaggi...
