About the Item

The art of Paul Renard can best be described as a true love story. He remained faithful his entire life. Painting the soft scenes around him as a boy, to the bustling sidewalks of Paris as a young man, into the maturation of an accomplished artist, Renard applied his sensitive and consuming fascination with seeking to capture the beauty of French city life and country rivers on canvas as he saw them right up until his recent death. He wanted others to sense, see and feel what he spent his life adoring. Also, as in the greatest of love stories, Renard patiently studied and savoured every nuance of his chosen affection. From the magnificence of lush river and harbour scenes of his birthplace in Rotterdam, Holland to the life-swollen Parisian streets, his magic brush strokes entice the viewer to experience the evanescence of the life he knew. There exists what might even be called a gentleness in the treatment of his subjects on canvas, and an obvious respect for the integration of nature with mankind. He shares with the viewer his vision of the delicate beauty of light, color, humanity, balance,…whether the subject be cobblestone streets, flowers, animals, flowing waters, or people tending their daily lives. Renard enunciate his very special love into each and every object. He sees, after all, only the beauty of his great mistress. The fact is that the entire era was about beauty. Although never considered a recognized art-history book period, “La Belle Epoque” (The Beautiful Era or Time) was very much an important movement in France in the late 1800's into the mid 1900's. Sort of sandwiched between and over-lapping the impressionistic and Post-impressionistic periods, "La Belle Epoque” was also akin to ‘Plein Air Art’. Movements such as’ Plein Air’ were born as a result of the invention of the camera which had a dramatic effect on the artists of the day. Colour and light became of utmost importance. There also evolved a belief among artists that it was the human eye which mixed specks of colour into one cohesive coloration. Seurat literally painted in speckles, while Monet painted adventurous scenes of haystacks over and over at different times of the day to the capture the different lights. The color wheel was conceived and young artists were excited. Artists such as Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Bazille introduced the concept of recording only what is visible at given distances under specific lighting conditions. In the evenings at Parisian cafes, the young artists often exchanged ideas about their recent discoveries. All of these things influenced Paul Renard who walked the same streets and visited the same cafes. Although born in 1941--late into the Period--he was nevertheless captivated by the styles of Monet and Renoir. At the age of 17 Renard commenced his studies at the Rotterdam’s Academy of Art and spent basically five years studying classical art. It was not until 1959 that he had his first exhibition. And the love continued to grow. 'La Belle Epoque' artists became well known in France and also had a dramatic affect of Renard. This affect is very evident in his paintings. He incorporates the same delicate strokes of light colour that Eugene Galien-Laloue used to create an uncanny ability of giving the illusion of detail in an impressionistic style. Perhaps the grandfather of Parisian street scenes is French Impressionist Edouard Cortes. Like Cortes, Renard spent his entire life dedicated to seizing the magic of Paris. His paintings express much of the same romance, energy and charm as those of Cortes, and display a common profound knowledge of perspective and composition. The paintings emit the same feeling of love for all of the light..; and colours of Paris ... the play of lights on wet pavement, the illumination of warm glows of light in Paris night scenes, snow falling gently to cast flecks of white in deep contrast to whatever coloured object they landed on, the detail given to paint the dainty feet of high-heeled women (much like Suerat) and their clothing. The viewer can know the beauty of the era. Many artists have painted the streets of Paris. Many continue to do so. Paul Renard is the embodiment and consolidation of elements from the past, the present, into the future, They are a perfect, joyful, affordable addition to any collection.
