He makes sculptures, photographs and works on paper documenting his journeys around the world, from long walks across Dartmoor in England to the peaks of Antarctica. He achieved prominence in 1967 with his seminal work A Line Made by Walking, conceived when he was still a student at St. Martin's School of Art, London. Long's first major UK solo exhibition took place at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, in 1971. Since then his work has been exhibited and collected throughout the world. Major solo exhibitions include Judd Foundation, New York (2016); Arnolfini, Bristol (2015); Tate Britain, London (2009), Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh (2007); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2006), Guggenheim, Bilbao (2000); National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto (1996), Philadelphia Museum of Art (1994), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (1986) and Hayward Gallery, London (1985). Long's work can be found in permanent collections all over the world; Arts Council, London; Tate, London; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago; National Gallery of Art, Washington; Museum of Modern Art, New York and the National Gallery of Canada amongst many others. Long represented Britain at the 37th Venice Biennale in 1976. He remains the only artist to have received four Turner Prize nominations, winning in 1989. He received the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture in 1990, was elected a Royal Academician 2001, and in 2009 was the recipient of the Praemium Imperiale for sculpture from Japan.
