Pieces of the Land

2017

About the Item

Medium: ink, colored pencil, graphite on washi Illustrations of found material collected, gifted, or observed at the Awagami Factory. Drawings on various washi including kozo, bamboo, and mitsumama papers. The illustrations are compiled into a hand-made book. RICHELLE GRIBBLE creates mixed media paintings and drawings, prints, videos, puzzles and sculptures. Her artwork is inspired by concepts of virality, ecology, networks, group dynamics, and social trends that connect us all. She earned a BFA in Studio Arts from the Roski School of Art and Design with dual minors in Social Entrepreneurship and Marketing at the University of Southern California, in 2013. Winner of 2016 Grand Prize Award for solo exhibition and representation at JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY with inclusion in Art Market San Francisco, Texas Contemporary, and Miami Project 5. Works exhibited on LED screen in Times Square; Christie’s Salesroom Rockefeller Center; Fisher Museum of Fine Arts; John Wayne Airport; and more. Art acquired by Tides Institute and Museum of Art, Kala Collection, Relativity Headquarters, USC’s Art & Trojan Traditions Collection, and also flew to space aboard Blue Origin’s space system. Work presented in a TEDxTrousdale talk “What is our Role within a Networked Society?” and published in The Creator’s Project, The Atlantic, and VICE Magazine. STATEMENT I explore life at all levels of living systems – organisms, social systems, and ecosystems – to examine and promote our interdependence. At each scale, under close scrutiny, nodes of a network reveal themselves as smaller networks. By visually revealing structural patterns and characteristics between cross-disciplinary networks, the distinctions between our social, biological, and technological networks blur into one integrated system, our connected Earth. My work has evolved from making comparisons between networks (i.e. molecular systems, social networks, neural pathways, freeways systems, etc.) into a deep analysis of an important question: how does connectivity, for better or for worse, influence our lives and our future?

Howard Tangye (b.1948, Australia) has been an influential force in fashion for decades. Lecturing at London’s Central Saint Martins for 35 years, including 16 years as head of BA Womenswear. There, he tutored many contemporary greats, including John Galliano, Stella McCartney, Christopher Kane, Wes Gordon, Zac Posen and Hussein Chalayan. Examples of Tangye’s portraits are held in many important collections, both public and private, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), Harvard University and London’s National Portrait Gallery. Throughout his teaching career Tangye quietly developed a particularly idiosyncratic art practice. By employing a decisive line with bold applications of richly layered materials, Tangye explores the nuances of the human form in an effort to expose his subjects’ true essence and energy. — Howard Tangye Craig (Richard's Friend - Sitting - Blue Jacket), 2012 Mixed media on grey...
