About the Item

Work on paper 24 x 29 inch (unframed) Signed and dated in the left bottom corner. Titled in hebrew at the bottom center, “Kiddouch”, signed and dated in hebrew upper right Our drawing was probably exhibited at the American Art Association in New York in November 1898. Born in 1872 in Posvol, Lituania, which was controlled by the tsarist Russia, Saul received in 1889 a letter from his uncle Abraham who had immigrated to America and offered him the chance to start a new life there. His mother gave him all the money she had saved after working as a seamstress for years, which allowed him to embark on a boat. At 17, Saul traveled alone and arrived in Castle Gardens in New York (Ellis Island only became the mandatory stop for immigrants in 1892) before going to meet with his uncle in Baltimore. He stayed there for a week before becoming a door-to-door salesman, as did many Jews then. He started selling tinplate objects in small cities on the East coast but soon took on another path, crossing the mountains of Maryland and West Virginia. Despite difficulties Saul became a successful salesman and in 1891 he was able to get his parents and his brothers a ticket to come to the United States. In 1892 he became the co-owner of a shop but despite his success Saul only had one dream: to become an artist. While he worked as a salesman he always kept a notebook where he draw everything he saw in the small cities he went through. His work was hung on the walls of his shop. A client recognized his talent and helped him enter the prestigious Maryland Institute School of Art and Design. He sold his shares of the shop and went back to Baltimore for his studies, which would also send him to New York and Paris where he attended the Julian Academy. His career took off and his work was bought by collectors in Baltimore: Etta and Claribel Cohen. He also became a Zionist activist and in one of the meetings of the Zionist Hovevei Chapter he met his future wife, Jennie Abel, as well as Henrietta Szold who had founded the Hadassah (association of Zionist women) and became his friend, his mentor and his patron. She helped him introduce his art to la crème of the Jewish community in Baltimore. His interest for Zionism influenced his work and he focused more and more on religious subjects such as this “Kiddouch” we have in the catalog of the Drylewicz gallery and which was probably exposed at the American Art Association in New York in November 1898 (we are lucky to have a picture taken of this piece then). Saul died at 33 while his art was finally at its peak. His work is mostly kept in the United States, in the Jewish Museum in Maryland and the Baltimore Museum of Art as well as in many private collections.
