Hand-signed and dated "Monte Porzio, 28 agosto 1874" on the lower right corner.

Beautiful and intimate scene depicting a typical interior of a peasant house: a female figure with a cap is on the left of the composition and she is doing chores in the kitchen. On the floor a rooster and a hen are scratching. The walls are characterized by copper containers and other domestic utensils. The scene is framed by a large round arch.
This work has been realized by Edoardo Gioja (Rome, 27 September 1862 - London, 30 May 1937) an Italian painter, decorator and photographer. Between 1890 and 1910, he worked on the decoration and furnishing of elegant Roman villas. Of this period almost only drawings and photographs remain as evidence. In the first period Edoardo Gioja was influenced by the refined taste of the Pre-Raphaelites. The meeting with Giovanni Costa led him to perform paintings from subjects observed from life. He then painted marine, plants, animals, with sober and natural colors. History painter, landscape painter, skilled portraitist, Edoardo Gioja was a versatile artist.
