About the Item

Signed lower right, 'Carl Niederer' (American, 1927-2019) and dated 1965; additionally titled, 'Yerba Buena from Telegraph Hill' verso. Carl Niederer first studied art at the University of Oregon and, subsequently, with Fernand Leger in Paris. After service in WW2, he sketched, painted and studied throughout Asia, traveling by steamer ship. In the 1960's, Niederer worked as both an artist and industrial designer in San Francisco and New York. He exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes and juried awards. A noted teacher, Niederer later became Head of the Art Department at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. Reference: Obituary, San Francisco Chronicle, 4.28.2019; et al.

    Signed lower left, "E Hansen" for Ejnar Hansen (American, 1884-1965) and dated 1936. Ejnar Hansen studied at Copenhagen's Royal Academy of Art before moving to the United States in 1914 and settling in Pasadena in 1924. An ardent proponent of modernist color theory, Hansen became an influential teacher at the Chouinard School, the Otis Art Institute, the John Muir College, and the Pasadena School of Fine Arts. He exhibited widely and with success, including in Denmark and at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the 1939 World's Fair and at the Cincinnati Museum. Ejnar was a member of the Academy of Western Painters, the Los Angeles Art Association, the California Art Club, the California Watercolor Society, Pasadena Society of Artists and the Foundation for Western Art. Ejnar Hansen's works may be found in numerous public and private collections including LACMA, the Pasadena Art Institute and the San Diego Fine Art Society.
