About the Item

Initialed lower left, 'W' for Edwin Lord Weeks (American, 1849-1903) and painted circa 1895. Edwin Lord Weeks was born near Boston and educated in Boston and Newton public schools, although he spent much of his adult life outside the United States. His artistic career began with a sketching trip to Florida in 1869, then continued in Surinam and other destinations in South America. Returning to Massachusetts, he painted landscapes and historical pictures in Boston. Moving to Paris, he first studied with Leon Bonnat, and, subsequently, with Jean-Leon Gerome at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Weeks, like Gerome, became interested in the color and romance of North African subject matter, and continued his travels to North Africa, Spain, and the Middle East. In 1872, he returned to Massachusetts, married his cousin, Frances Rollins Hale, and set up a studio. After less than a year, the young couple joined Robert Gavin, a Scottish painter, on a trip to the Mediterranean and Morocco. The rest of the 1870s he spent there, returning to Boston only occasionally to exhibit and do illustration work. His paintings of the 1870s emulated Gerome but, during the 1880's, his work became more academic and detailed. Paris remained his base during this period and he exhibited successfully at the Parisian Salons, receiving both popular and critical acclaim. Edwin Lord Weeks also exhibited widely and with success in the United States, including at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In addition, he was an elected member of several art organizations including the Boston Art Club and the Paris Society of American Painters. As well as being a painter, photographer, and illustrator, Weeks was also a writer. Between 1893 and 1895, his illustrated accounts of his travels appeared in Harpers and Scribner's magazines and were later compiled into book form. Edwin Lord Weeks work is held in public and private collections world-wide and the artist is listed in all relevant art reference works including Benezit and Thieme Becker. Reference: E.
