About the Item
Early and rare 20th century watercolor landscape of a stream in the forest by Joseph Anthony Kahler (Austrian/American, 1852-1937). This beautiful Northern California scene of the McCloud River near Mount Shasta is reflected in the glassy water, creating a serene mirroring effect.
Signed and dated "McCloud River, Calif. J.A. Kahler 1912" lower left.
Displayed in a double mat and wood frame with glass. Image size: 8"H x 6.25"W.
Born in Vienna, Austria on Oct. 12, 1852. Kahler was a resident of San Francisco by 1883. He was art director of the Hearst papers in Chicago and San Francisco from 1883-1928. Many of his paintings went up in flames in 1906. His rare works include portraits, landscapes, Indian and historical genre in watercolor and oil. Kahler died in Los Angeles on Jan. 22, 1937. Exhibited: SF Newspaper Artists, 1903.
