About the Item

Born in Boston in 1928, painter Laurence P. Sisson lived most of his life in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Sisson studied at the Worcester Art Museum School, Yale Summer School and was the artist-in-residence at the Publick House in Sturbridge, MA. In 1955, he became the Director of the Portland School of Fine and Applied Art. Sisson was a member of the American Watercolor Society, Boston Watercolor Society, and the New Jersey Painters and Sculptors Society. At the age of 23, Sisson had a solo exhibition at Vose Gallery in Boston and over the course of his career exhibited extensively, including at the Corcoran Gallery, National Academy of Design, Allied Artists of America, American Federation of the Arts, Cincinnati Art Museum, and the Portland Museum of Art, among others. Sisson's works are held in collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Art, Berkshire Museum of Art, Columbia Museum of Art, Albuquerque Museum, Portland Museum of Art, Worcester Museum of Art, Bowdoin College, Colby College, Dartmouth University and Clark University.
