About the Item

Paul Lecomte (1842-1920) The River Seine at Les Andelys with Chateau Gaillard, Normandy Signed lower left Watercolor on paper 27 x 37 cm Original frame (some minor damages) 39.5 x 49.5 cm with the Label of the Goupil Gallery in London, for an exhibition in 1912 : Les Andelys is a famous and pittoresque village set on the river Seine, just down an other famous historic place : the ruins of Chateau Gaillard. Chateau Gaillard was a key fortress on the river Seine built by the King Richard Lionhe art to defend his english possessions in Normandy against Kings of France Les Andelys was also,the birthplace of the painter Nicolas Poussin, but it's for the view on the river and the ruins of the castle that this place was cherished by impressionnist painters such as Maxime Mauffra and over all paul Signac who often depicted the place. Of course Paul Lecomte offers his own version, with a peculiar attention to dayly life on the bank (peasants) and on the river (different type of boats) Paul Lecomte was born in Paris on April 15, 1842. He was a painter of landscapes and coastal scenes. He is considered as one of the last quality representatives from the Barbizon School. He was the pupil of the painter Emile Lambinet (1813-1877) but the influence of Camille Corot and Henri Harpignies are the most noticeable in the developpement of his style. His art is deeply influenced by japonism just as his almost exact contemporary Claude Monet. He painted in Brittany, Normandy or South of France but also in England where he exhibited his works also. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1868 onward, winning different medals and awards. He died in Paris on March 21, 1920. Works by his hand are held by the Louvre Museum and the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris the Musée des Beaux Arts in Mulhouse and the Musée Baron-Martin in Gray. Literature : Benezit, Schurr
