About the Item

Prakash Karmakar – Landscape – 11.5 x 10.5 inches (unframed size) Ink on paper Signed lower right in Bengali Inclusive of shipment in roll form. Karmakar is best known for his landscapes and nudes, which are generally painted in vibrant colors with bold lines and intricate textures. His paintings reflect his perception and interpretation of nature (both orderly and chaotic), life (both rural and urban), and form (from soft to sharp), without reference to religion. The Master artist drew inspiration from life that was close to him. The fish sellers in the market, the many beaches he visited, the Digha beach in Bengal being most frequented, the sundarbans. Truely an ecelectic artist, son of the very famous artist Prahalad Kormakar. Prokash Karmakar was a very important pillar in the Bengal Art Movement and features regularly in the prestigious auctions. Style : Legendary master artist Lt. Prakash Karmakar from Bengal was solely responsible for the Bengal Movement of Art. His father Lt. Prahalad Karmakar was a very famous legendary artist ; but unfortunately all his paintings got burned in the riot. Prakash Karmakar led a very tough life , ofthen sleeping on the platforms of the railway stations of Bengal. Later he worked in the textile line and simultaneously painted and exhibited his works on his own strength , until he got huge acclaim and success . He was a master nude artist and painted women in their natural habitat. In his earlier days of artistic practice the Master Painter along with his contemporaries exhibited on street corners , to shun the four walls of the gallery . Most of his earlier artworks capture remembrances from the past - some of them are very personal, and some are from the darkest moments of human history. More recently he has painted landscapes, depicting lush tropical vegetation, hills and valleys, seascapes and mangroves in their wild diversity. Large fish-shaped eyes are assets of Prakash Karmakar females by which he is often recalled. More so because his female are rendered askew with voluptuous curves, drunken stare and sometimes wantonly explicit erotic gestures. At one time, quite early in his life his demonic damsels, fem mes’ fa tales, or nudes with fleshy shapes of sensual bulge or dismembered limbs or focused genitalia became his signature images. His landscapes too with their piquant painterly refashioning of natural forms and by sheer force of their varied recurrence became a subject-index of his style. About the Artist and his work : Born : 20th October, 1933. Education : Govt. college of Art & craft, Kolkata Prakash Karmakar came from an artistic family; his father was a renowned artist of his time. Unfortunately, all of his father's paintings were destroyed in the Hindu Muslim riots in the 1940s, which also ruined his family. By 1949, both his parents had passed away, forcing him to abandon his studies at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata. He joined the army for two years and then quit to work as a graphic design manager for a medical firm in Kolkata. Virtually penniless and desperate for a break, in 1956, he held a street exhibition, the first in the city, hanging his works along a corner. Ross lower right Provenance: Estate of the artist. BIO Arthur Rosenman Ross was a key figure in automotive design at General Motors during America's "Golden Age" of auto design, the 1930's through the 1950s. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago from age 17, exhibiting a special interest for automotive renderings and the female figure. In 1934, he changed his name from Rosenman to Ross, fearing his Jewish ancestry could prejudice his career prospects. At age 20, he turned down job offers from MGM Studios in Hollywood and Duesenberg to work at General Motors alongside the Legendary Harley Earl in 1935. He was hand picked by Mr. Earl and assigned to GM's War and Camouflage Division in 1937 through WW2. It was during this pivotal period in which he executed some extraordinary military aircraft artworks, likely used between GM and America's military aeronautics companies in design preparation for WW2. General Motors played an important role in helping America's aircraft manufacturers preceding and during the war. Just after the war in 1945, Mr. Ross was rewarded by GM, being made Chief Designer of Cadillac, then two years later becoming Chief at Oldsmobile until his retirement in 1959. He was in large part responsible for some of GM's classic Cadillac designs such as the Cadillac Sixty Special, Fleetwood, LaSalle and GM's first concept car, the extraordinary Buick Y-Job. Mr. Ross was an exceptionally charismatic and vivacious man who quite by chance, befriended His idol, Salvador Dali at GM in 1955. They talked about art, cars and girls late into the evening, according to his son, Carter Ross. He had a gift in rendering the erotic arts...
