"Utah Layers" by Rebecca Livermore, watercolor, 10 X 15 inches (Frame size: 17 1/4 X 21 3/4 in.), $2150. "Quiet places are my usual subjects. We live in a world both flawed and exquisite, boisterous and serene, unsettled and hopeful. I paint landscapes of wide open places – and still lifes of everyday objects – to celebrate the peaceful and beautiful elements of our world and of humanity. Each painting is a challenge, but also a delight to paint. My paintings portray the tranquil places I’m drawn to, but the paintings themselves are not always quiet. I enjoy the transparency of watercolor and the way the pigments blend together in lively and sometimes unexpected ways. Many of my paintings begin with an under painting of wet, loose, and/or splattered paint that helps gives the finished painting both unity and interest. I particularly love to paint skies. When I begin to paint a sky, I usually have several brushes loaded with a spectrum of colors, allowing me to add quick touches or splatters of several colors while the entire sky is wet. I love lots of color and have found that the restrained use of almost any hue for almost any subject, detail or highlight can be effective in delighting the eye and in unifying a painting. My skies incorporate the colors of the land and my landforms incorporate the colors of the sky. Having spent 20 years as a graphic designer informs the way I design my compositions – altering reality as I please – to create a mood and to focus on the most personally intriguing aspect of my subject. Sometimes I simplify my designs to highlight the organic, flowing shapes in a landscape or to call attention to a certain aspect of my subject. At other times, I add complexity with the use of stylized, repeating lines and forms (frequently in contrasting colors) to define edges and to contrast with and/or emphasize the essential characteristics of my subjects. Drawing and painting these invented lines and forms is my way of adding myself to my subject and contributes to the joy and satisfaction I feel while I’m painting. Through careful research, I have selected a palette of lightfast pigments which will not fade over time. I purposely use these pigments, sometimes in unexpected places, sometimes in unexpected ways, to exaggerate color relationships in my subjects. All of my paintings employ lightfast pigments, acid-free paper and archival framing materials." -Rebecca Livermore
