In this painting, Banks has managed to effectively convey the scorching heat of a Mediterranean summer. It is likely that this work depicts a town in Italy, a country where Banks spent a considerable amount of time travelling. His paintings of this country almost exclusively focused on sections of it's architecture. This unwavering focus of subject reflects Bank's passion for architectural forms that was also put into good practice through his position as a town planner.
Robert Louis Banks
Banks was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. An architect and artist, Banks studied at the Architectural Association between 1928 and 1933. Following military service in the Second World War, during which he was awarded the Military Cross, Banks worked as a town planner until the 1950s, when he began to devote himself to painting.
A fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, he exhibited his work at the Trafford Gallery and the Alwin Gallery in London. He travelled extensively around Italy, painting views in Rome, Venice, Lecce, Naples, Urbino and elsewhere, and also visited Greece and Japan.
Banks often painted scenes around Italy during his travels, capturing the quiet streets and buildings of the sun-drenched cities that he visited.

- A Fishing Boat at Sea, Late Mid-Century Gouache on PaperLocated in Cotignac, FRFrench gouache on paper of a boat travelling the seas. The work is unsigned but dated 22/11/70. Presented in simple gilt frame with handcut mount. A really engaging and powerful painting. The artist has managed to capture the swell of the sea, the movement of the boat listing gently to one side, the slightly rusty hull, the moody sky filled with all the seagulls following behind, which suggests it might be a fishing boat. They have used a limited but strong colour palette, blues, blacks and greys and then just to highlight and catch the eye a splash of green to represent the starboard or right bow light.Category
