The watercolor is presented and supplied in a sympathetic contemporary frame (which is shown in these photographs), mounted using conservation materials and behind glass.
The watercolor is signed lower left.
This antique painting is in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It wants for nothing and is ready to hang and display.
Charles Adderton was an accomplished landscape painter in watercolour. He was born in Nottingham in 1866, but spent periods of his life living in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire. He studied at the Scarborough School of Art under Albert Strange and had a studio in Scarborough in 1894, later living in Robin Hood’s Bay.
In 1920 he was again in Nottingham where he exhibited a total of 226 paintings in the Nottingham City Art Gallery.
Adderton had a reputation far beyond the Midlands however and he also exhibited in the leading London galleries from 1890, including 7 paintings at the Royal Academy, and others at the Royal Society of British Artists British Academy and the Royal Institute.
He was a keen yachtsman and his landscapes included many coastal scenes.

Biography:
Born January-March 1873 in Wolstanton, Staffordshire. He was the son of George Theaker (1835-1902, born in Sheffield, Yorkshire), headmaster (principal) of the School of Art in Burslem from 1869-94 and designer for pottery. His younger brother, Charles Edmund (1875-1903) was an apprentice designer modeller and then a teacher at the Wedgwood Institute in Burslem around 1900.
Harry George was an apprentice pottery decorator and then a teacher. He settled in London c.1900-05 and was in charge of design at the Polytechnic in Regent Street from about 1906 onwards, where he also taught courses in 'modelling from design'. Theaker remained at the Polytechnic and is listed in prospectuses as headmaster (principal) between 1931-2 and 1937-38.
Theaker was also a successful illustrator, particularly of children's books. His first known published works date from about 1911, and most of his illustrations date from the 1920s and 1930s. Amongst the books he illustrated are 'The Ingoldsby Legends' by Sir Thomas Ingoldsby, London, 1911; 'Children's Stories from 'The Arabian Nights', by Rose Yeatman Woolf, 1914 (and later editions); 'The Adventures of Don Quixote', c.1920 and 1929; 'Gulliver's Travels', 1928; 'The Water Babies', 1930; 'Grimm's Fairy Tales', 1930; 'Stories of King Arthur', 1925 and 'Long, long ago: stories from the classics' both retold by Blanche Winder, the latter probably in the 1930s (see National Art Library catalogue...

Gustav Melcher was a German painter and a pioneer in film, film criticism and film theory and created this clever little picture of the skyline of Venice with various vessels.
Going by the various inscriptions an the backing paper, this drawing was made in 1918 when Gustav was twenty years old and passed on three years later to Gertrud Melcher on the 1. 2. 1921. I have no reasons to doubt this information. The small drawing is still in its unopened frame, so maybe there is more information to be discovered , however this will be the privilege of the next owner.
The picture also has retained its original antique frame – note that it has lost over the years various sections of the gesso decoration.
The very precisely executed drawing is most enjoyable to look at and doing so, remember you are looking through the eyes of a young man, who saw this foreign sea cape over a century ago.

Gustav Melcher began his studies at the Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie under Peter Janssen and Eduard von Gebhardt. Originaly he was interested in figurative and portrait painting, but after time he decided to pursue the depiction of land- and marinescapes. Durin his studies the young artist undertook trips to visit England, Scotland, Belgium and France and he joined the artist society Malkasten. Claude Hayes was a Dublin born painter who to avoid his father's wish to make a businessman of him ran away to sea and served on the Golden Fleece, one of the transports used in the Abyssinian expedition of 1867-68, and also spent a year in the United States. Returning to London, he studied art at Heatherley's and the Royal Academy Schools, and then in Antwerp, under Charles Verlat. He worked in Hampshire with James Aumonier and also in Surrey with William Charles Estall, whose sister he married.
Hayes exhibited widely in London and provincial centres, and was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1886, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1883, and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, 1902. He also showed at the RA, RBSA, Brook Street Art Gallery, Dudley Gallery, FAS, GI, Grosvenor Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, MAFA, RBA, RHA, Ridley Art Club, RSW and Walker's Gallery, London. In 1912, Claude Hayes represented England at the Venice Biennale. His work is in various public collections in England and Ireland including the Ulster Museum, Museums Sheffield, Torre Abbey Museum and the Leeds City Art Gallery. His father was the artist Edwin Hayes.

Charles Bentley was born in Tottenham Court Road, London. He was apprenticed as an engraver to Theodore Fielding, and went on to work in Paris with his brother, Newton Fielding, with whom he engraved a number of watercolours by Richard Parkes Bonington. This experience had a profound influence on his own development as a watercolorist.
In 1827, Bentley set up as an engraver, and worked as an illustrator, though with little financial success. Concentrating instead on watercolour, he was elected an associate of the Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1834, and a full member nine years later. Over thirty years, he exhibited 209 works with the society, also showing work at the Society of British Artists and the New Society of Painters in Water Colours.
Many of these exhibits were the fruits of extensive travels that Bentley made around the coasts of the British Isles, and to the Channel Islands and Normandy – the last in the company of fellow artist William Callow...

William Joy was the elder of the two brothers William and John Cantiloe Joy (see our other listings for an example by the brother).
