John Terrick Williams
Canal, Leydon Holland - Gorgeous Impressionist Pastel, water with reflections

early 20th century

About the Item

A wonderful Oil pastel drawing by the artist Terrick Williams. Renowned as the foremost post impressionist painter in the Uk he left a diverse and stunning body of work. This artist is equally proficient in Oils, Watercolour and Pastels and i have had some fine examples of each over the past 30 odd years. His work is all about the light and shadows and this is just a perfect example of that. He has deep shadows reflected on the water and light glancing on the buildings. The sky in this picture is beautiful, he has built up layers of colour which wonderfully convey the warmth of a summers day. Leyden (also known as Leiden) is a favourite spot of the artist - he painted here frequently. The majority of his work was on the continent as he preferred the light there. Interestingly on the reverse is a half finished watercolour which he clearly abandoned in favour of this composition. Leyden is famous for being the birthplace of Rembrandt and for being only second to Amsterdam for its number of waterways and bridges. This painting was exhibited at the Fine Art Society in 1944. It is mounted in hand coloured mount and framed in a bespoke handmade frame (Framed size is 18 by 22 inches).
