Vincent Vella
Untitled 054 (Contemporary Abstract Landscape Pastel on Paper)

1990

About the Item

Pastel on paper Paper size is 17 x 14 inches, unframed Vince Vella’s landscapes are the work of a spontaneous painter obsessed with his mantra of “Rock, Sea, and Sky”. This contemporary pastel work on paper demonstrates a sophisticated palette of pale blue, kelly green, bright yellow, sand and a bright streak of magenta. Brilliantly juxtaposed; the colors themselves assume the roles of land, sea and sky to define the horizon. These pastels are exceptional unique works of art that would fit into any vignette of small framed works. There are more small and medium works available by this artist that make perfect groupings for a salon style installation or diptych/triptych. All unframed drawings are available for immediate shipping. Established in 1991 as the first fine art gallery in Hudson, NY, Carrie Haddad Gallery represents professionally committed artists as well as emerging talent specializing in all types of painting, both large and small sculpture, works on paper and a variety of techniques in photography.

  • Rooftops (Framed 1970's New York Cityscape Landscape Drawing by William Clutz)
    By William Clutz
    Located in Hudson, NY
Abstracted New York City landscape drawing of urban rooftops and tree tops "Rooftops", created by William Clutz in 1977 30 x 20 inches, charcoal and pastel on paper 33 x 25 inches in light wood frame This framed pastel on paper was made in 1977 by William Clutz. It features an abstracted depiction of New York City rooftops as seen from a high window. Of particular note is the artist's technique with pastel; a wonderful texture and motion is created by closely woven striated lines. Sunlight reflects off brown rooftops and peaking green tree tops. The charcoal and pastel drawing is framed in a natural light wood frame with non-reflective glass and wire backing for installation. About the Artist: Renowned as the “impressionist of the contemporary metropolis”, William Clutz uses the city, in its entirety, as his subject. Pedestrians crossing streets become stars of the stage; the hustle and bustle of traffic and surrounding buildings are the chorus; each play their part in the overall composition. Lighting and color shift this observation of the everyday into a remarkable wonder. “It is surely Clutz”, wrote Gerrit Henry in Art News, 1979, “an artist who has rejected the niceties of representation in favor of the quintessence.” The young artist moved to New York City in 1955 and just four years later had his first solo exhibit at the Condon Riley Gallery. Clutz went on to show in major uptown galleries such as David Herbert, where, notably in 1962 he received a NYTimes review titled, Return of the Figure. That same year, his role in the revival of figuration was further solidified with inclusion in the MoMA group show, Recent Painting USA, The Figure. This was a pivotal turning point from which emerged a 50-year exhibiting career. By Jacques Yankel
    Located in Surfside, FL
Jacques Yankel, pseudonym of Jakob Kikoine, born on April 14 , 1920 in Paris, is a French painter and sculptor. He is the son of the painter Michel Kikoine. Born in Boucicaut hospital, Jacques lived as a child in the artists' colony La Ruche in Paris. He grew up to the age of ten at La Ruche, the workshop created for artists by the sculptor Alfred Boucher, in the 15th arrondissement of Paris. Around him live also other artists, including the inseparable Pincus Krémègne and Chaïm Soutine, arrived from Vilnius in Russia where they met. It is an extraordinary intellectual and artistic universe where the genius of the artists and their great poverty rub shoulders in a Paris which hosts this Expressionist school which will become "the School of Paris". Chagall, Modigliani, Fernand Léger, Alexander Archipenko, Max Jacob and others. When he had just started studying at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he was forced to flee to Southern France with his family to escape the Nazis. During the Second World War, he held temporary jobs in printing and engraving workshops, notably at the Draeger printing press in Toulouse, where events led him to take refuge with his family. From 1940 to 1945, he pursued very advanced studies of geology at the Faculty of Sciences, specializing in micro-geology. He graduated in 1943. In 1947, he participates episodically as an amateur painter in the Chariot group, with the artists Jean Hugon, Michel Goedgebuer, Robert Pagès, Christian Schmidt, Andre-Francois Vernette, Jean Teulieres. The group is active until 1954. In 1949, he was hired by the Colonial Office for the geological map of Gao - Timbuktu - Tabankort in French West Africa . From this episode, he will keep a certain taste for African art of which he will become a collector. The following year, he unexpectedly met Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre in Gao. The latter encourages him to return to painting. He won the Neuman First Prize, which he shared with Reginald Pollack and a Fénéon Prize Scholarship. Among his friends are Clavé, Cottavoz, Pelayo, Hanna Ben-dov, Pollack, Jean Jansem, Roger Lersey. In 1953, accompanied by Orlando...
