William Mellor was a popular nineteenth century landscape painter. His parents, Joseph and Mary, were linen weavers and for a while William too worked as a loom tuner, responsible for the running of several power looms. The family also had a strong artistic talent though and whilst William was a child his father Joseph became a professional artist. By the age of 30 William too had become a professional landscape painter. His artistic development was undoubtedly influenced by his father and his early works share his style. William himself was born in Barnsley, though his family moved to Leeds whilst he was young. In 1876 William married Mary Elizabeth Watson and they went on to have three sons and a daughter. During his professional life William travelled widely to paint, including large parts of north Wales and the Lake District, and moved his family to Scarborough, London, Manchester and Southport. His final move was back to Dragon Road, Harrogate in Yorkshire, where he lived until his death in 1931. William painted in both oils and watercolors. He produced some beautiful tranquil scenes, creating a timeless record of classical British landscapes. His patient compositions typically depict lake or river views in summer or early autumn, using a warm palette, with an expert delicate depiction of foliage bathing in the glow of sunlight. His paintings show nature as serene, majestic, peaceful. William Mellor was elected an Associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1884 and a full member in 1891. He exhibited widely between 1876 and 1910 and today his works appear in the collections of the Walker Gallery in Liverpool and the Manchester City Gallery. Nowadays his works are highly sought after by collectors. This original watercolor painting depicts a traditional stone bridge over the River Llugwy near Capel Curig. The water beneath the bridge flows over numerous large boulders, causing a delightful waterfall effect, before joining the more tranquil waters of the river as it flows on. Tall trees frame the bridge, delicately painted in warm autumnal shades and there are rocks and bushes in the foreground. In the background there is a range of mountain peaks, in cooler shades and there is light cloud in the sky. The scene captures the essence and beauty of late summer in a timeless landscape. © Big Sky Fine Art
