Date: 20th century
Description: View of an unclothed woman lying turned away on a raised mattress. She seems to sense the viewer's gaze and holds her arms protectively around her head and face. The darkness that seems to spread behind her carries something threatening and contrasts with the white sheet landscape on the bed. The meagre known biographical data reveal little about the artist Carl August Walther. He is said to have been highly acclaimed as a painter and etcher, but never achieved fame. Carl August Walther, born in Leipzig in 1880 and died in Dresden in 1956, lived through the Empire, the World Wars, the Weimar Republic, the Nazi state and the founding of the GDR. His artistic path led from a technically convincing, object-oriented realism to symbolist and expressive tendencies and back again.
