Joyce Wieland (1931-1998) is one of the most accomplished and versatile Canadian artists. She achieved a level of commercial and critical success in her lifetime that was exceptional for a woman during an era in a male-dominated field. Notably, she was the first female artist to have a solo exhibition at the National Gallery (Ottawa) in 1971 and the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto) in 1987. Although Wieland was an artist who was always drawing, she launched her career as a painter. Always experimenting, her art practice expanded to incorporate a range of media and materials, from textile works to film. In New York City, she was best known as an experimental filmmaker. In the mid 1960s Wieland began to embrace more representational and narrative elements in her work. Inspired by comic books, and her background in film as an animator, Wieland embraced figuration albeit clearly influenced by Pop Art. One of the reoccurring motifs in Wieland's oeuvre is playing with and subverting icons of femininity. Mariette Lydis (Vienna 1887 - Buenos Aires 1970) is an Austrian painter and illustrator who was successful in Paris in the 1930s, in Montparnasse and then in Argentina, where she emigrated in 1940. Mariette Lydis was born on 24 August in Vienna, Austria 1887. From 1919 to 1922 she signed her works with the initials MPK for Marietta Pachoffer Karñy, a name derived from her first marriage in 1910 to Julius Koloman Pachoffer-Karñy, who died on 22 April 1922. Subsequently she lived in different cities around Europe, among others: Athens and Florence. She moved to France from 1926 to 1939, during these years she exhibited and became a member of the Salon d'Automne. She befriended Count Giuseppe Govone, the art publisher, in 1928 and married him on 1 August 1934, for whom she illustrated the books of many authors and cultivated a great friendship with Henry de Montherlant, which came about through the publication of a first in 1938 monograph by the author of Les Jeunes Filles. Fearing the German invasion, she travelled to England and then to Buenos Aires in July 1940, where she stayed and published published her latest paintings...

Reclining Female Nude Charcoal on paper, c. 1933 Signed lower right (see photo) Provenance: Weyhe Gallery, New York (Ganso's dealer 1925-1941) Joseph Mark Erdelac, Cleveland, noted collector who had a large collection of Ganso works Ganso was born in Germany in 1895. At age 14, he apprenticed to a baker and then worked his way to America when he was 17. He worked in bakeries in Scranton, Pennsylvania; and Cincinnati and Akron, Ohio. By 1916, Ganso out of a job, and was living the life of a bohemian in New York City, sometimes on less than 30 cents a week.1 In 1921, Ganso painted a realistic nude on a bedsheet, and was forced by the police to remove it from an exhibition. The bedsheet with the painting was later stolen. He soon had a job baking again at $140 a month, and with time to spare for painting and study. Ganso quit baking in 1925 when a New York dealer gave him financial backing of $50 a week. Ganso prospered from his art after that. His work is in over 15 American museums, and the Print Club of Cleveland awarded him a $500 purchase prize for a wood engraving. A versatile artist, he painted a variety of subjects.
