This piece was inspired by the Moirai, the three fates in Greek Mythology that determine the course of human beings' lives. Each fate has a purpose: Clotho spins the thread of life, Lachesis measures it, Atropos cuts. I wanted to depict these archetypes in a dreamy landscape, and emphasize their peacefulness as well as their power. The starburst effect was created by sprinkling salt on the painted surface while it was still wet. This painting is on heavyweight paper measuring 10.5H x 8W. The piece is on a matte measuring 14H x 11W. It will need a frame for display.
About the Artist
Chamisa Kellog is a professional illustrator, with a degree in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her background and training in illustration undoubtedly influence the style and content of her fine art. She illustrates and reinterprets stories we already know, fairytales and myths. Outside of the story, she re-imagines the characters and captures them in their defining moment. The focus is on the moment of the character’s loss or transformation, which makes them who they are, or who they will become. For instance, the moment Pandora opens the box, or Red Riding Hood conquers the frightening wolf. The work is both light and dark. It is whimsical in its illustrative storybook style, but mature and serious in its subject matter. The emphasis on where she places detail is surprising. The characters have blank, featureless faces, but vibrant colored hair and clothes. Without identifying facial features, the work captures the universality of fairytales. We are all at some point caught in a comprising moment, tangled, exposed, or threatened.
