François-Maurice Roganeau was a French painter, illustrator and sculptor who was born in Bordeaux on 13 January 1883 and died in Aix-en-Provence on 30 June 1973.
He studied with the sculptor Gaston Veuvenot Leroux and Paul Quinsac at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, before going on to study with Jean-Léon Gérôme and Gabriel Ferrier at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. He started out as an illustrator and painter. As an illustrator, he worked mainly for the publisher Henri Laurens.
In 1906, he won the first Grand Prix de Rome for painting and the second Grand Prix for sculpture. He exhibited at the 1912 Salon and won a medal for his painting Le Soir, à la Rivière, inspired by one of André Chénier's Poésies antiques.
In 1917, he was commissioned to paint the identical ceiling of the Grand Théâtre in Bordeaux, originally painted by Jean-Baptiste-Claude Robin. He also supplied Gustave Pierre Dagrant with cartoons for stained glass windows, such as the one for the church in Castillon-la-Bataille.
He was director of the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux from 1929 to 1958.
François-Maurice Roganeau was made a Knight in the National Order of the Legion of Honour by decree on 21 January 1932.
