Painter, pastellist, portraitist, genre painter and landscape artist, he was born in Nancy in 1869 and died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1938.
After studying Fine Arts, Henri Royer attended the Académie Julian in 1890, where he studied with Jules Joseph Lefebvre, Théodore Devilly and Flameng. In 1894, he exhibited numerous works at the Galerie des Artistes Modernes in Paris.
He then traveled to america and europe before settling permanently in bretagne, a region that fascinated him.
His art oscillates between naturalism and academicism, without lapsing into the easygoing worldliness that would surely have enabled him, thanks to his talent as a portraitist, to become as famous as many painters of the belle époque. an excellent draughtsman and pastelist, his technical virtuosity is reminiscent of that of Emile friant, an artist to whom he was close.
