Lubin de Beauvais
Lubin de Beauvais (1873-1917) L'Anse de Launay 1911, signed color drawing

1911

About the Item

Lubin de Beauvais (1873-1917) L'anse de Launay, a woman at the beach, 1911 signed, dated and titled "Anse de Launay, Loguivy Ploubazlanec, Bretagne, 23 août 1911" on the lower left color pencils on paper 33,3 x 23.3 cm In good condition In a modern frame: 46 x 39 cm There is a lot of sensitivity in this intimate scene, the choice of technique and colours reinforces the light and subtle character of this summer scene at the beach. The way Lubin de Beauvais signed, located and dated it suggests that he captured it in the moment, sitting like his model on the pebbles of the beach as if to immortalise a piece of happiness. The cove of Launay is a beach in Brittany, located a short distance from the town of Paimpol and the island of Bréhat. Lubin Paul Gaston de Beauvais (26 March 1873 – 3 January 1917) was a French painter, watercolourist, draughtsman, and illustrator. He also used the pseudonym Gabriel de Laumont for lithographs and illustrations of galants works, a name he borrowed from his mother. He collaborated with many Parisian newspapers and magazines, including La Baïonnette, Le Charivari, Le Frou-frou, L'Assiette au Beurre, Le Rire, Gil Blas illustré, La Libre Parole illustrée, and La Vie Parisienne, as well as children's magazines. He also illustrated musical scores, postcards, and novels. He took part in the humourists' exhibition in Copenhagen in 1909 and the Salon des Humoristes in Paris in 1910. He died in the 14th arrondissement of Paris on 3 January 1917.

Pencil study portrait drawing of a child painting at an easel by French artist Charles-Jean Agard. The work is signed bottom left and presented in a carved wood and gilt frame with mount under glass. A very charming pencil study of a child sitting at an easel. Agard has beautifully captured the head and face in full, with the light and shade, the rest of the body and surroundings are in sketch form, the contrast between the two making for a very successful composition beautifully capturing the intensity of the sitter.
