About

An outstanding member of Philippine Neo Realism, Tabuena settled in San Miguel in 1955, where he lived until his death. Following advice from David Alfaro Siqueiros to never forget his roots, he combined local subjects with those of his homeland. In some portraits he is depicted in his studio dressed in a suit making a painting that evokes the work of Rufino Tamayo. Tabuena is considered one of the most important Philippine artists of the twentieth century; the INBA honoured him in 1995 after 40 years of residence as an artist in Mexico and again, with the exhibition Millennium, organised in conjunction with the Philippine Embassy in Mexico. The Nudo Gallery is the only gallery that handles pieces from his private collection and that has his works from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s available. These are the most significant periods in his artistic career. In addition, it issues certified guarantees and has a space completely devoted to the exhibition and sale of the work of the Philippine artist Romeo Tabuena: Showroom Romeo Tabuena by the Nudo Gallery. Romeo Villalva Tabuena (August 22, 1921—October 15, 2015) was a Filipino painter and graphic artista born in the city of Iloilo. He studied architecture at the Institute of Technology of Mapúa and painting at the University of the Philippines. He also studied at the Art Students League of New York and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Tabuena decided to settle in Mexico, in particular in San Miguel de Allende, from 1955, which became the foundation of his career. But he maintained his ties with his native country by means of his participation in his principal art projects and, in spite of his long residence in Mexico, he kept his Filipino citizenship.
