About

Till Freiwald is best known for his large, highly realistic watercolor portraits of unidentified women and men. Freiwald’s portraits combine a realism reminiscent of Chuck Close with an idealism of traditional academic portraits. His works are both minimalist in their representation of the sitter, while also conveying a deep connection with the viewer in their straightforward gaze. He has exhibited at the Carzaniga Gallery in Zurich, Switzerland, Galerie Voss in Dusseldorf, Germany, and the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York. Works by Freiwald are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Kemper Museum of Contemporary of Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. This untitled watercolor highlights Freiwald’s unique ability to pair monumental portraiture with his technical adeptness with watercolor. The artist typically works in two formats: 90 by 60 inches and 30 by 20 inches. Ken Johnson, of the New York Times, asserts that, “Mr. Freiwald's smaller studies from life are in some ways more satisfying. [In the smaller works] the artist is more responsive to the way light plays over the three-dimensional structure of the face. The paint is more unpredictably varied and the person portrayed seems more individualized and alive.”
