This piece was inspired by the Dutch Golden Age flower still lifes, especially those of Maria van Oosterwyck. I admire these still lifes because of the great attention to detail spent in painting them--and because the artists could paint plants that don't flower at the same of year--to create a bouquet that wouldn't be possible to assemble in real life. I decided I wanted to paint my own flower still life in a color scheme of purple and green. Then, I spent a spring and summer gathering photos of flowers so I could create this pastel. It is made of chalk pastel on acid-free pastel paper. The pastel has not been treated with a fixative and will need to be framed for display.
About the Artist
Anastasia Pimentel finds inspiration anywhere and everywhere. I;ve often stopped in the middle of a run to snap a photo of an interesting plant or animal or (safely) stopped my car to take a picture of a cool building, she explains. In each work, she strives to highlight the beauty she sees in the world. Pastel is her favorite medium because of its soft texture; she enjoys using her hands to form each composition. Whenever she;s not making art, you can find her reading or growing plants ; she;s got a bit of a green thumb.

- Bird BathBy Dwight SmithLocated in San Francisco, CA
Artist Comments
This is a humorous original still life watercolor painted in the realist tradition. The rubber duck was a gift from my wife and the porcelain bowl was my mom's that she used many years ago to give me and my brother baths. The pedestal is yard furniture. I enjoy making people smile with my art.About the Artist
Dwight Smith depicts commonplace objects with a sense of playfulness and humor. His watercolor still life paintings appear conventional in their soft colors and composed compositions, but upon further observation the juxtaposition of unrelated items make for delightfully surprising combinations and comparisons. This transformation of the everyday, and strong graphic style, lend the work a pop feel. However, pop art is generally cool and ironic. Instead, there is a familiar and comforting sense of kitsch and Americana in Dwight’s subjects. In a similar fashion to the work of American artist Wayne Thiebaud, Dwight paints food and sweets of the American appetite. Doughnuts, hotdogs, and lollipops are captured in all of their potent delight. He plays with scale and composition to bring out a sense of the absurd, but ultimately his goal is to make the viewer smile.Bird Bath...
