While not exclusive to fashion, dresses have been a compositional focus throughout her oeuvre. With an emphasis on timelessness, her series of dress paintings shift between realistic representation and interpretive impressions. In contrast, her series of abstract works embrace minimalism, considerate to a restrained palette and composition. Stajan-Ferkul began her career in fashion advertising before shifting her focus to fine art in 2000. Her work has been exhibited widely through galleries and art fairs, and hangs in private and public collections across Canada, US and Europe. A graduate of Sheridan College of Art and Design, Stajan-Ferkul's paintings can be found in numerous public and private collections, her work has been published in magazines and book covers, and prints are distributed internationally. In 2009, Stajan-Ferkul was invited to exhibit her work in Ottawa’s Rideau Hall, hosted by (then) Governor General of Canada, Michaëlle Jean. keywords - contemporary art, painting, dress, dress painting, fashion, fashion inspired, fashion illustration, couture, haute couture, texture, textile, textile art, neutral, black and white, monochromatic, impressionism, neutral, black and white, yellow, perfume, chanel

  • Paris 1919 - 1929 Art and Culture French Book, by Vincent Bouvet, 2009
    Located in Atlanta, GA
Paris 1919 - 1929 Art, Vie et Culture (art, life, and culture), French book by Vincent Bouvet et Gérad Durozoi, 2009. Paris was an international melting pot of arts and letters during the inter-war period. Between the parade of the allies in 1919 and the one of the Germans in 1940 on the same Champs-Elysées, Paris will experience a fruitful cultural and intellectual period for 20 years, open to the avant-garde and faithful to the best of tradition. During this inter-war period, France still appeared as great economic, military, and colonial power. The fame of French culture is centralized in Paris, from which ideas and fashions radiate. Artists and creators come from all continents to the City of Light to draw their inspiration and gain recognition in the eyes of the world. During the "Roaring Twenties" that followed the euphoria of victory, Paris shone with a thousand lights. The "Lost Generation," the one of Hemingway and Fitzgerald, is the most important of the foreign colonies that animate the nights of Paris who discovers jazz. But the bohemian lifestyle of Montparnasse attracts painters and sculptors from the four corners of the globe, such as Chagall, Giacometti, Miro, and Calder, to the studios, cafés, and bars, such as La Coupole. A chameleon genius, Picasso simultaneously experimented with all the paths, including those of nascent surrealism. Matisse, Léger open academies. The School of Paris brought together painters as varied as Soutine, Derain, Van Dongen, and Foujita. Abstract art sets up its world headquarters in the city, with the stay of Mondrian, the arrival of Kandinsky, and the creation of movements such as Abstraction-Creation. Haute couture confirmed its supremacy with the houses of Chanel, Vionnet, Lanvin, and Schiaparelli. The craftsmen of luxury, like Ruhlmann, captivate their clients with the luxury of their creations known as "Art Deco." Intellectual life is in full swing, punctuated by quarrels between Dada and Surrealist groups, ideological struggles, differences between literary schools, and opposition between theatrical genres. Gide and Valery appear as tutelary and universal figures, while the generation of Mauriac and Malraux, among others, refine novels and essays distributed throughout the world. Then the crisis of 1929, the coming to power of authoritarian regimes, darkened the climate of the whole of Europe. If Paris remains an active cultural and intellectual center, it loses its carelessness. Artistic experimentation, architecture, in particular, experienced a return to order or reflected growing insecurity and the eruption of violence, such as Guernica (1937) by Picasso. Political instability and the emergence of the Popular Front resulted in riots, demonstrations, and parades which regularly rocked the city. Monuments built on the occasion of universal exhibitions, such as the Palais de Chaillot in 1937, inscribe their monumentality in the urban fabric...
